ARGENTINA & CHILE

zorzal wines
ZORZAL WINES, TUPUNGATO, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

Founded in 2008 to promote the un-explored wine region of Gualtallary. The project is benefitting from investment in the best equipment and team possible. This new project is based on traditional winemaking, with the majority of work being done in the vineyards. This combined with minimal intervention winemaking, best reflects the Gualtallary terroir. Gualtallary is a remote place in the pre Andes, located in the Tupungato Department in the Northernmost sector of the Uco Valley in Mendoza. It is the highest altitude zone in the region, 1,200 to 1,600m above the sea level. It has alluvial, primarily sandy soils with calcareous deposit and sectors with a presence of smooth round granitic riverbed stones, covered by calcium carbonate.

The wines have lively, slightly austere profile, reflecting the soils and the altitude of the area.

ALTAR UCO

ALTAR UCO, GUALTALLARY,
TUPUNGATO, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA

Apart from his direct involvement in the family winery (Zorzal), the youngest of the Michellini brothers – Juan Pablo, is also behind a range of wines named Altar Uco. In this personal project Juampi takes his exploration of Tupungato (precisely Gualtallary) to the next level. He has started in 2014, aiming to make wines which encapsulate the place where the grapes are grown, as well as man’s interpretation of that place. In his own words: “Altar de Uco is a continues and eternal project. A constant search to achieve even more pure and delicate expressions of the terroir.”

The Edad Moderna range is made to be enjoyed relatively young – those are lively, textural wines which undergo short period of ageing and are not marked by oak. Edad Media is a result of more complex elaboration, using variety of deposits (French oak barrels, large format foudre, as well as amphorae) – a thought provoking, singular wines with long and bright future ahead of them!

Roberto Henríquez

ROBERTO HENRÍQUEZ, BÍO BÍO, ITATA, CHILE

A humble Pais (Listan Prieto) grape which is nowhere to be found in Europe (except for phylloxera free Tenerife), is at the very heart of the revival of this estate.

Roberto works in the most traditional way, making pure and expressive wines in true Chilean context. He cultivates 3 hectares of 150-200 years old Pais vines to the south of the Bio-Bio river, near Nacimento. The soils in the area are mostly granitic, partially alluvial with a proportion of clay and sand. Biodynamically farmed grapes are foot trodden and whole cluster fermented in open top, wooden lagares (locally called rauli). The wine is aged in pipas – large, old barrels which lend the name (pipeño) to both: method of production and to the rustic, yet extremely elegant style of wine.

The grapes for his characterful white come from the head pruned, old vine plots of Corinto (Chasselas), Muscat of Alexandria and Semillon in the southern, coastal part of Itata, where red granite soil predominates. The juice is fermented with natural yeast and the wine remains in contact with the skins for approximately three months.
