CLAUS horiz.jpg

The winery has 19 hectares of vines, planted across 3 villages, on the east side of the Lake Neusiedl. Focused on the indigenous grape varieties Zweigelt, Blaufrankisch and St Laurent. Merlot serves as a back up for the blends, while Pinot Noir is planted solely for enjoyment. Claus uses a biodynamic approach, aiming to stay in tune with nature and with the land
he cultivates. This means: cover crops in the vineyard, humus production from cow and horse manure, homeopathic plant support - working with the knowledge derived from Rudolf Steiner. He is the youngest member of the group Pannobile. “The wines are my image of the nature. I try not to influence artificially in the vineyard and cellar. Even if I could amend the wine, I choose not to, because I want to show what the nature is capable of”.

Bernhard Ott is the fourth generation of the Ott family to grow and produce wine in the Wagram region of Lower Austria. The family has produced wine in the region since 1889, Bernhard took over the management of the winery, relatively rencently, in 1995. He succeeded his father and has expanded the estate to 28 ha in Feuersbrunn and Engabrunn. Since then, Bernhard has improved the cellar with new stainless steel tanks, initiated the use of Stelvin for all bottling and converted many of the vineyards to biodynamic cultivation, certified by RESPEKT. He has found that since conversion he can harvest his grapes at physiological ripeness several weeks earlier than before, resulting in lower alcohol wines. Bernhard Ott was awarded Austria’s highest accolade as Falstaff’s Winemaker of the Year in 2008. Vineyard area: 28 hectares.
