Produttori del Barbaresco

PIEMONTE (BAROLO, BARBARESCO, DOGLIANI, LANGHE, COLLI TORTONESI)

PRODUTTORI DEL BARBARESCO,
BARBARESCO DOCG

“Produttori del Barbaresco is like that long-lost friend who always picks up a lively conversation no matter how many years have passed since your last meeting. It is the ultimate fallback wine: never intimidating or awkward. It’s always a pleasure to drink.” Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Issue 207, June 2013.

In the vast and fascinating world of wine, there are few producers who attain the iconic status and Produttori del Barbaresco is one of them. Inspired by the pioneering XIX century project of “Cantina Sociale del Castello” – Produttori was reinvented in 1958 by Don Fiorino – a priest appointed to run the parish of Barbaresco. To help the struggling farmers, he persuaded nineteen of them to make wine together. The members decided to focus on one grape only (Nebbiolo), grown exclusively in Barbaresco. “Produttori was an exception from day one – thanks to the vision of Don Fiorino and a few important decisions made back then” – says Aldo Vacca, the managing director of the cooperative since 1991. Six decades later and from its humble beginnings, Produttori has grown to become a 54-member co-operative, which constantly outperforms any similar ventures both in Italy and worldwide.
While nine of Produttori Single Cru Riserva wines have their special status, the flagship bottling – Barbaresco DOCG is a benchmark for the quality in the region.

TREDIBERRI
VIGNERON-vinostito.jpg
TREDIBERRI, NICOLA OBERTO,  BAROLO (La Morra), LANGHE DOC, DOGLIANI

When tasting the wines of Nicola Oberto, we knew we had stumbled upon a real gem from the hills of Langhe – precisely La Morra commune of Barolo DOCG.

Trediberri is a winemaking venture named after the hamlet of Berri – a Barolo Cru located at the western edge of La Morra, where Nicola, his father Federico and their close friend, Vladimiro Rambaldi, jointly invested in 5 hectares of vineyards. Apart from that they also farm: two hectares of the top Barolo vineyards in the Cru of Rocche dell’Annunziata which were inherited from Nicola’s grandparents, and in the Cru of Torriglione, where they grow Nebbiolo, Barbera and Sauvignon Blanc.
Nicola has learnt about the winemaking from his father who was working for a large Barolo producer for several decades, while his mother Anna Rosa Oberto passed on to him the respect for nature and the land. The wines are made in a traditional way, with extended maceration and ageing in large botti. It is a project which is young at heart and full of positive energy and the wines really reflect this.

PIERO BENEVELLI

PIERO BENEVELLIBAROLO (MONFORTE D’ALBA)

We keep exploring Piemonte and never cease being impressed with the quality coming from this northern Italian region. The most recent addition to our list – Piero Benevelli comes from the hillsides of Monforte, a commune at the southern limits of the Barolo DOCG.

Massimo and Denise Benevelli run this family winery founded by Massimo’s father in 1978. Up until the 1990’s they have focused primarily on growing grapes and supplying wine in bulk, having remained “under the radar” for quite some time. They have bottled their communal Barlo in the 90’s and the first single vineyard Ravera di Monforte was launched in 2008.

Growing up among the vines, Massimo has special connection with the land he farms. He had started his winemaking training as a teenager, working alongside his father. The importance of the genuine work in the vineyards shines through in Massimo’s wines. His Freisa, Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barolo are striking reflection of the place they come from. Traditional, minimalistic vinification and ageing in tonneau, followed by the Slavonian botti, results in lively and characterful wines with great potential for ageing.

OLTRETORRENTE

ORGANIC.png
OLTRETORRENTE, CHIARA PENATI&MICHELE CONOSCENTE, COLLI TORTONESI

After completing their studies and several years of working for others, Chiara and Michele arrived in the village of Paderna (Colli Tortonesi), determined to make their winemaking dream a reality. That is how Oltre Torrente was born... from the initial 1.5 ha of old Barbera vines and out of the desire to settle and evolve. For over a decade, they have worked patiently, gaining the trust of the locals. The project grew to 7 hectares of Cortese, Barbera, Dlocetto and Timorasso – a very special native grape. Despite being quite scarce, Timorasso has gained quite a following in recent years, praised for the richly textured, age worthy whites it delivers.
We have found Oltre Torrente wines expressive and easy to connect with - a genuine result of a thoughtful exploration of the land and traditions of the region. They turn the inner smile in us... and we hope they will have the same effect on you!
