BODEGAS CONTRERAS RUIZ, CONDADO DE HUELVA

Contreras Ruiz is located in Condado de Huelva DO which borders the National Park of Doñana – a virgin land and a gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. Ninety percent of their vineyards are planted with the indigenous variety called Zalema, the trademark of this area. Unique red wines are made with Tintilla de Rota (aka Graciano).

The viticulture has been organic for some time, and the winery received their certification in 2020 vintage.

VIÑEDOS VRTICALES
VIGNERON.png
VIÑEDOS VERTICALES, SIERRAS DE MÁLAGA

Viñedos Verticales is the realization of a shared dream by two friends, Juan Muñoz and Vicente Inat, both seasoned winemakers with extensive experience. They have started their work in Moclinejo, a small village in Axarquía (Málaga), an area close to the Mediterranean Sea with steep slopes of arid, slate-covered soil. The most important grape here is Moscatel de Axarquía accompanied by other white varieties like PX, Doradilla and the red grape Rome.

Viticulture here remains deeply traditional and truly heroic, practiced on dramatic slopes where the bond between vineyard workers and the mules is essential and enduring. Their philosophy is to work with respect both in the vineyards and in the winery. The wines ferment naturally and elaboration takes place in old trujales (concrete tanks), oak barrels and centenary foudres.

COTA 45, RAMIRO IBÁÑEZ, SANLÚCAR DE BARRAMEDA

We have visited Ramiro several times, and every tasting with him has been both a learning experience and a masterclass in the wines of Jerez and Sanlúcar. Ibáñez is one of the brightest young winemakers, driving a quiet revolution in Jerez. In addition to his own project, he consults for other wineries in the region. His unfortified Palominos showcase the diversity of albariza soils and the distinct character of each pago. This is undoubtedly one of the most exciting wine projects in Spain!

BODEGA DE LA RIVA
BODEGA DE LA RIVA, RAMIRO IBÁÑEZ & WILLY PÉREZ SANLÚCAR DE BARRAMEDA

Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Pérez are at the vanguard of the current revolution in Sherry. Their shared winemaking philosophy values ‘place’ over ‘process’ and in coming together to revive the historic M Antonio De la Riva brand, they are releasing some of the most exciting wines in El Marco de Jerez today. Although the project is still in its infancy, the initial tranche of wines includes an excellent fino and a range of superb, very old, oxidative and sweet wines. Their flagship however is the youthful unfortified white wine from the Pago Macharnudo, one of the region’s most well-regarded terroirs. De La Riva is a winery with the potential to realise and revitalise Jerez’s reputation for producing world class wines. Paddy Murphy (Sherry educator).

PRIMITIVO COLLANTES
NEW  PRIMITIVO COLLANTES, CHICLANA DE LA FRONTERA, JEREZ

Primitivo Collantes, established in 1908, is located near the coast in Chiclana de la Frontera. The bodega is strategically positioned to benefit from south and west Atlantic winds, creating a cool, humid environment ideal for flor development. The estate’s principal vineyards, Galván and Matalián, are planted with old vines on chalky albariza soils.

Ceballos is a lighter, less pungent Fino, aged three years under flor, sourced from the Pozo Galván estate. Fino Arroyuelo, from Matalián, undergoes controlled spontaneous fermentation and five years of biological ageing; Fino Arroyuelo En Rama is bottled unfiltered from the finest barrels of the oldest solera.

NV Amontillado Fossi ferments spontaneously, ages seven years under flor, followed by ten years of oxidative ageing.

Viña Matalián is an unfortified, unoaked Palomino from young vines, noted for its low pH, freshness, and fruit-driven profile.

Migul catro maillo
NEW  MIGUEL CASTRO MAÍLLO, SIERRA DE MONTILLA (RIOFRIO ALTO)

Rafa discovered the wines of Miguel Castro Maillo last summer, while being back in Cadiz. Intrigued, without a further delay he decided to get in touch with the winemaker.

Miguel comes from the family of growers in Montilla-Moriles. During his studies of oenology in Cadiz, he grew fond of Marco de Jerez wines, particularly enjoying the unfortified, biologically aged whites made with Palomino. Getting to know the winemakers: Ramiro Ibáñez and Willy Perez, inspired Miguel to return to his grandfather’s vines and to experiment with the old Pedro Ximenez planted on a chalky albariza soil in Riofrio Alto, an area at 550 metres of elevation in the Sierra de Montilla.

The vines, between 50 – 80 years are pruned “en Vaso” in traditional way called ‘ojo y coillo’– the two buds that form the spur; “ojo” – “an eye” being a productive bud and ‘coillo’ – ‘a tail’ which will become next year’s spur.

Miguel’s fascination with old ways of winemaking, prompts him to ferment and age his PX with a veil of ‘flor’ in old fino butts. The entry ‘Ojo y Coillo’ is aged for 10 months. In the more elaborated ‘Estatico’– selection of best botas aged for 24 months – Miguel looks for the identity of the vineyard and the expression of the ‘flor’.
