FILIPA PATO VINHOS, DO BAIRRADA

Their goal is to make ‘authentic wines without make-up’. The grapes are organically grown and picked at the best point of their maturity to make wines that express their origin, with as little interference as possible. The Pato family have made wines in the Bairrada region of Portugal for five generations which gives them rare insight into the region’s grape varieties, old vineyards and unique terroirs.

After working on three continents Filipa Pato began her own winery in Bairrada in 2001. Over the years she has added further vineyards and has rebuilt a 19th century winery to house a cellar for casks, amphorae and bottles. In 2010, appalled by the devastation of the indigenous Baga grape, Filipa joined forces with her father and other growers in Bairrada, forming the group called “Baga Friends”. They work together to preserve and maintain the heritage of the old Baga vineyards in Bairrada.

TIAGO TELES
TIAGO TELES & COZS – DA CRUZ E TELES, SERRA DE MONTEJUNTO (LISBOA)

For Tiago Teles wine was always so much more than mere result of a specific soil type, altitude, or grape variety… Rather he saw it as part of a wider socio-cultural context. Although communication engineer by trade, traveling, drinking wine, and writing about it became Tiago’s true vocation. In his journey through remote parts of Portugal, what interested him was not only the places, but also a human interaction with each other and its creative potential. Perhaps it is this interest in people that resulted in many collaborations in various parts of the country, in the years which followed. In 2012 Tiago embarked on the winemaking path, starting in his native Bairrada, shortly after adding to it wines made further north in Minho. In 2015 he began a lasting collaboration with his friend António Marques da Cruz in Serra da Montejunto, a hilly oasis with Atlantic climate to the north of Lisbon. From this project we bring two wines: PoP COZs. The enigmatic red Raiz is “a free, wondering wine” – every vintage a result of different human and vinous encounters. In 2020 it is made with Syrah and Castelão sourced from Quinta da Murta in Lisbon.

FAMILIA CARDOSO
FAMILIA CARDOSO, HEREDADE DA LISBOA. VIDIGUEIRA. ALENTEJO.

In Alentejo, the Vidigueira sub-region is characterised by a micro-climate created by the Serra do Mendro to the north, which is a natural barrier to the fresh winds from the Atlantic Ocean, providing high daily temperature ranges and enabling grapes to ripen perfectly and evenly.

The Herdade da Lisboa, at the heart of this sub-region, is located between the Ribeira de Selminhos

watercourse to the east and Ribeira do Freixo to the west with its even richer soils. The combination of this local Mediterranean climate and the rich, predominantly schistose soils bring together unique conditions for the production of elegant, fresh wines, marked by their minerality in the case of the whites and by fruity purity and their capacity for ageing in the reds.

Heredade da Lisboa spans a total área of 350 hectares of which 200 are olvie groves and 100 are vineyards.

MÁRCIO LOPES
MÁRCIO LOPES, DOP VINHO VERDE

Márcio Lopes started his winery in 2005, working alongside one of the Portugal’s most respected winemakers – Anselmo Medes in Vinho Verde. In the years that followed, he travelled to Australia (Rutherglen in Victoria and Tasmania), gaining a wide range of experience. He returned to Portugal in 2010 to start his personal project in Monção e Melgaço – an area known for the pink granite soil and Alvarinho dominated whites, which are
a “clear cut above” the usual ones coming from the vast DOP of Vinho Verde. With the grapes he purchases from several small growers and those coming from his own 5 hectares of vineyards, Márcio is making honest, terroir driven wines. 2017 marks the first vintage of his single varietal Loureiro, which has been vinified with native yeast, in stainless steel tanks and kept on fine lees for 5 months prior to bottling.

CASA DA PASSARELLA
CASA DA PASSARELLA, DOP DÂO (SIERRA DA ESTRELLA)

When passing through the gates of Casa da Passarella one gets the impression that time stopped here at least a century ago. This historic estate was created in 1892 by the Portuguese entrepreneur, Amand d’Oliveira. He built a colonial style mansion and planted 200 hectares of vines, recognising the potential of the Dao region, long before it was officially demarcated. Unfortunately, in the decades that followed, the cooperative based system imposed by government contributed to the decay of the estate.
The restoration and rejuvenation project only started here in 2007, when the property was bought by Ricardo Cabral, who invested in returning the house and the winery to its former glory. The vineyards of Casa da Passarella are planted on granitic – sandy soils, between 400-600 metres above sea level. Steady breeze and significant difference between, day and night temperatures,  enable much longer “hanging time” for the grapes, which produce fresh and vibrant wine with plenty of natural acidity and supple, yet firm tannins in the case of reds.

ANTONIO MADEIRA

ANTONIO MADEIRA, DOP DÂO (SERRA DA ESTRELA)

Although Antonio Madeira was born and lived most of his life in Paris, his family roots are in Serra

da Estrela – in the historic Dão region. It took some time, but Dão kept calling and eventually pulled him back and away from the busy city life... While in France Antonio fell in love with wine by tasting natural wines from Jura and Burgundy and he quickly realised that the old vines of Dão are a hidden gem, only waiting to be re- discovered. In 2011 he made his first vintage from a 50 year old vineyard belonging to a family friend and from then on, begun his quest for the old plots, planted with rare local varieties like: Tinta Pinheira, Negro Mouro, Tinta Amarela and Baga. With some care, those native gnarly vines (many of them on their own rootstocks!) are yielding incredible results! Antonio works in minimalistic, organic way, with micro parcels in six different villages and the wines are always a filed blend (echoing the Dão of the past), wild fermented and with minimal sulphur at bottling. We have met with Antonio several times in Portugal and always loved the purity and the ample energy of his wines. They resonate with us and we have no doubt he is one of the most exciting winemakers in the region!
