Although Vieira de Sousa family has been working their vineyards in Cima Corgo for five generations, they have only started bottling their port in 2008. For Luísa Borges, who oversees the winemaking, it was very much a “home coming” experience. After graduating from oenology and two years of working for Taylor’s, she joined forces with her sister Maria reviving the family brand. They own five fincas in Cima Corgo, in direct proximity to the vineyards and equipped with traditional granitic stone lagares. Depending on the style, the wines are either elaborated in stainless steel (to capture lively primary fruit of the ruby ports) or aged oxidatively in large format tonneau or smaller pipes (tawny and white ports). Luisa favours freshness and primary fruit profile, so she harvests a little earlier than others. The sweetness in her wine is never “too much”, as it is offset by lively acidity. Addition of the finest quality aguardente is carefully calibrated and the spirit is seamlessly integrated.
