BODEGA CAMPOS REALES,
LA MANCHA

Bodegas Campos Reales was founded in 1950 and over the years grew to cover 400 hectares planted with wide variety of grape varieties. While they excel in Tempranillo, other (also international grapes) are utilized to make wines which deliver exceptional value at a very friendly price point. The grapes go through a triple selection process (in the vineyard, at the reception and in the winery) to ensure that the resulting wines represent the highest quality possible.

BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS PONCE

BODEGAS Y VIÑEDOS PONCE, JUAN ANTONIO PONCE, MANCHUELA

Juan Antonio Ponce is at the helm of this small, family run bodega. They began bottling their own wines in 2005, after generations of traditional grape growing that continues today, with the adoption of biodynamic techniques. Most of Ponce’s grapes are old vine Bobal, averaging 50, but up to 85 years old, and are planted at an altitude of 700m and higher. He also makes monovarietal wines with Monastrell, Garnacha and a white from an indigenous grape called Albilla.

Only traditional methods are used in the winery. At Bodegas Ponce. the grapes are vinified by plot, each representing a different terroir, with its own personality. There are very few, if any other producers working with Bobal in this manner, and in only a few years they have managed to create a serious following of their wines around the globe.

LA COMARCAL VITICULTORES AMBULANTES
JAVI REVERT VITICULTOR

LA COMARCAL, JAVI REVERT & VÍCTOR MARQUÉS, VALENCIA

La Comarcal is a collaboration of the two friends: Javier Revert and Victor Marques who met few years ago, while working together at Celler del Roure. Quite early on they discovered a common interest in exploring the viticultural heritage of the region they both come from and in making wines that speak of their origin. Despite working full time as winemakers (Javier making his own wines, as well as consulting for others and Victor for Casa Lo Alto and Murviedro) they have managed to finf time to create something special together.

The underlying philosophy of La Comarcal is relatively simple: travel around the region (Viticultores Ambulantes) in search of unique, sometimes long forgotten vineyards, then collaborate with the local vine growers. “Our goal is to work with friends and together with them to be able to bottle unique places and moments”. Javi defines viticulture in a humble way as "an exercise in observation” through which unique link between the grower and the plot of land is established.

JAVI REVERT VITICULTOR,

VALENCIA

We came to know Javi Revert through his excellent work at Celler del Roure and most recently through the collaborative project La Comarcal. Since 2014 Javi also makes wine in his home village of Font de la Figuera in the south – western corner of DO Valencia. He has started this personal venture, inspired by his grandfather from whom he inherited a very special plot named Pla de Micalet, which was in the hands of his family for three generations. Curiously enough, this ancient, terraced vineyard with elevations between 710m – 730m above sea level is planted with mix of indigenous white varieties: Tortosi, Trepadell, Malvasia, Merseguera, PX and Verdil which thrive in the warm Mediterranean climate. The soil is chalky and poor in organic matter, more akin to albariza found in Jerez. After re-discovering this unique vineyard, Javi continues his exploration of the home area, now farming around 6 hectares of vines – several of which are north facing, higher altitude plots with sandy- chalky soil. For his red wines he works with local varieties: Garnacha Tintorera, Monastrell and Arcos, with an average age of vines 50 years old.

CELLER DEL ROURE, PABLO CALATAYUD,VALENCIA

Celler del Roure was established in 1996 as a family winery. Since 2009 they have recovered an old part of the winery, dating from the 17th century, with 97 amphorae between 600 and 2800 litres in capacity, buried into the earth. Pablo Calatayud started exploring how wines were made centuries ago and how they would have tasted. Today, they have recovered 20 of these amphorae and are making four different wines in this exciting range, also rediscovering old varieties from the region such as Mandó, Arcos and Verdil. We believe that this is the closest that we have been to the wines that were drunk in the region a couple of centuries ago!

RAFAEL CAMBRA

RAFAEL CAMBRA, VALENCIA

Rafael Cambra’s aim is to produce high quality wines, from the Monastrell grape, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, often planted in the area. His wine philosophy is minimal intervention throughout the process: “we try to reach the purity and clearness of our carefully selected grapes: looking for personal, elegant and powerful wines.”

Angosto Cellar belongs to the Cambra family and is located in Ontinyent (Valencia). Vineyards are in two estates: Finca Santa Rosa and Finca el Angosto. They are vineyards with a sandy structure, poor in organic matter and with a high content of limestone. Their aim is to produce high quality Mediterranean wines which are concentrated and elegant in the same time.

CURII UVASY VINOS
VIGNERON.png
CURII UVAS Y VINOS, ALICANTE (XALÓ)

Curii Uvas y Vinos is a joined venture of Violeta Gutierrez de la Vega and her partner Alberto Redrado. Apart from being involved in successful family operations (Alberto is a proud owner and a sommelier of one of Spain’s top restaurants La Escaleta and Violeta still works alongside her father Felipe Gutierrez de Vega, whose wines remain a reference in the area), they always dreamed of creating something of their own. Up until 2016 vintage they vinified the wines in Gutierrez de la Vega winery, eventually relocating to their own premises in 2017. The main protagonist in the Curii vinous adventure is Giró – grape variety with somehow enigmatic past... While research in University of Alicante continues, it is highly probable that this rare grape arrived in Alicante from Sardinia around XVII century. Even though it has adapted well to the local climate, second half of the 20th century nearly brought it to extinction. Viola and Alberto work just over 3 hectares of Giró in Marina Alta – a secluded, high – altitude area, at the northern limits of DO Alicante. The centenary, head pruned vines, tucked between the sea and the mountains, yield exceptional quality fruit. Curii wines convey the authenticity and the spirit of the Mediterranean – bringing together freshness, structure, and delicacy with abundant fruit profile.

CERRON & STRATUM Wines

BODEGA CERRON & STRATUM WINES, JUMILLA (ALBACETE, FUENTE ÁLAMO)

It has been long time coming but finally the change towards the wines of terroir and elegance has reached Jumilla! Bodega Cerrón is a winery located in the town of Fuente – Álamo, province of Albacete (DO Jumilla). Currently run by the two brothers - Juan Jose and Carlos, who continue the work started by their great grandfather Francisco Cerdán in 1895. The multitude of the small parcels they farm biodynamically are planted to free standing, old bush vines of Monastrell often accompanied by other local varieties: Forcallat, Rojal, Blanquilla, Moravia Agria and Airén. Since 2011 they have particular interest in saving and recovery of old, ungrafted (pie franco) vines, grown on altitude of 950m above the sea level - an additional project which culminated in creation of terroir driven range called Stratum Wines in 2018. Without a doubt those are some of the most sensational wines made in Spain in recent years.
