4 KILOS, FRANCESC GRIMALT & SERGIO CABALLERO, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE MALLORCA

In August of 2006, Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero set up 4Kilos Wines, a company dedicated to the production of wines which reflect the subtle nuances of grape, climate, and soil of the island of Mallorca. From the early days they have been supported by local winegrowers, which is important when attempting to make wine with a strong identity and respect for tradition.

In many vineyards native vegetation cover is used to obtain more concentrated grapes, better ground porosity and increased microbial population. The vineyards are in different parts of the north and south of Mallorca, the reason being that they do not belong to any particular D.O. They are planted mostly on Cal Vermell soils, a popular name used to describe a local type of clay. The varieties that are grown Callet, Cabernet, Sauvignon, Fogoneu, Merlot, Monastrell and Syrah.

SUERTES DEL MARQUÉS,
JONATAN GARCÍA ,TENERIFE (VALLE DE LA OROTAVA)

Johnatan García of Suertes Del Marqués is a winemaker who never loses the sight of the tradition. The use of native yeasts is a key factor in his wine-making process. Both stainless steel and concrete tanks are utilized in the winery while ageing in Burgundy barrels and larger format foudre is part of the elaboration process. This combined with the personality of the plot where the grapes are grown imbues his wines with unique identity and character.

The estate “El Esquilón”, is located in the area known as “Las Suertes” in the mid - region of La Orotava Valley. It is a 9 ha. vineyard consisting of 21 plots, rising in altitude from 350 to 700 meters above the sea level. The vineyards are mostly composed of old, ungrafted vines of black and white Listan grapes, which coexist with other native varietals. A unique method of vine training called “Trenzado” (multiple cordon) is traditionally used.
