4 KILOS, FRANCESC GRIMALT & SERGIO CABALLERO, VINO DE LA TIERRA DE MALLORCA

In August of 2006, Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero set up 4Kilos, a venture dedicated to the production of wines which reflect the subtle nuances of the grapes, climate, and soil of the island of Mallorca. From the early days they have been supported by local winegrowers, which is important when attempting to make wine with a strong identity and respect for tradition. In many vineyards native vegetation cover is used to obtain more concentrated grapes, better ground porosity and increased microbial population. The vineyards are located in various parts of northern and southern Mallorca, as they do not fall under any single D.O. designation. Most are planted on Cal Vermell soils—a local term for the island’s characteristic clay. The varieties grown include Callet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Fogoneu, Merlot, Monastrell, and Syrah.

SUERTES DEL MARQUÉS,
JONATAN GARCÍACANARY ISLANDS, TENERIFE

Jonhatan Garcia of Suertes del Marques is a winemaker who never loses the sight of the tradition…

‘El Esquilón’ estate is in the historic ‘Las Suertes’ area of the mid-zone of the La Orotava Valley in the north of the island. It comprises 9 hectares divided into 21 plots (suertes), ranging from 350 to 700 meters above the sea level. The vineyards are largely planted with centenary, ungrafted black and white Listán vines, alongside other native varieties, and are trained using the traditional Trenzado (multiple cordon) system.

Native yeasts play a central role in Jonathan’s winemaking. Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel and concrete tanks, followed by ageing in Burgundy barrels and large format foudres.

This combination, together with the distinct character of each plot, results in wines of strong identity and sense of place.
