Wines of Transparency: Introducing iClivi

The range of iClivi wines

The range of iClivi wines

The wines of iClivi hail from the north-eastern region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia in Italy. The region has a tradition of wine making that spans two thousand years; its wines were celebrated by Pliny the Elder in the 1st century AD.
The wines of iClivi seek to capture the character of this land and its wine tradition. Towards this end, iClivi have acquired two ancient vineyards comprising 12ha of vines in total on sea-facing slopes: 8ha in Corno di Rosazzo in the Colli Orientale del Friuli DOC district and 4ha in Brazzano di Cormand in the Collio district. Despite the terribly poor condition of the vines on acquisition the majority were rescued. The vineyard soils are composed of a mixture of limestone, clay and sandstone.
The grape varieties planted are Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano and Malvasia Istriana for whites (some other varieties play minor roles) and Merlot for red wines. Vine age is from 40 to 80 years old. Hand harvesting and strict sorting ensure that only the best and highest quality grapes are used in the wines.

The philosophy of iClivi is to make as ‘transparent’ wines as possible, where the soil, climate and tradition can be perceived without interference from the cellar. Wines with the ‘purest terroir expression’ with no intervention or alteration in the cellar are the goal. Therefore, organic viticulture is practised, with naturally low yields (<20 hectolitres per hectare, which is less than a third of that allowed by the DOC regulations) followed by spontaneous, non-interventionist wine-making. Natural yeasts cause the fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation (where applicable) is also spontaneous. The wine are then matured in inox stainless steel tanks on their lees for 2 years with no racking or filtration. No oak and no extended maceration, pure grape juice transformed into wine.
